Community Quilt Making: 2nd grade
Objective: Students will create a mixed media quilt square that represents themselves and the role they play/or want to play in a community. Students will uncover how they fit and work together cohesively. A sense of community will be revealed as roles begin to form and students begin to discover what they want their specific role(s) to be.
Materials:
12x12 sheet of matboard
markers
fabric
colored pencils
glue
scissors
found objects
photographs (of self)
Procedure:
1. Students will learn about the history of quilt making and artists included
2. Students will read several books about quilts and begin to sketch and record what they would like to include in their own artwork.
3. Students will be exposed to a variety of symbol systems and how these are important to different cultures, religions, areas and countries.
4. Students will create a storyline for themselves and their quilt square.
5. Students will, as they are completed, build a quilt on the floor of the classroom, with an organic and natural feel, building connections from square to square and expanding on their own with those that are or are not nearby.

A Call to Action: Albatross in Need of Recycling: 3rd and 4th grade
Objectives: Students will discuss the importance and need for recycling. We will introduce artist Chris Jordan and discuss his journey and discoveries with the lack of recycling. Students will appreciate how found and recycled objects can be made into art. We, as a class will create a collaborative mural as a call to action for those in our school community to recycle.

bottle caps
hot glue gun
bottles of glue

mural board/foam board
pencils.
Procedure:
1. Show presentation of Midway series. Prezi link: http://prezi.com/va2rqn8mm14l/contemporary-issues-recycling/. We will discuss the impact of garbage on animals and our planet. Brainstorm on what images we would like to include and convey in our mural.
2. Students will create a mural in which all classmares will participate in doing so, using only recycled objects, with an emphasis on bottle caps.
3. Students will choose a location within the school to display their work, we will talk about the work as a group.
4. Write five sentences about the mural and your involvement in the project.

Having your Art and Eating it Too: 4-5th grade
Objective: Students will be asked to re-create a folk tale using food (mainly cupcakes and candy). Students will need to communicate their folk tale without writing or speaking.
Materials:
Plates
Bowls
Cupcakes
Icing (various colors)
Snacks including but not limited to: Twizzlers, Pez, Pretzels, Raisins, M&Ms, Gumballs, Chocolate Chips, Reece's Pieces, Jolly Ranchers, Tootsie Rolls and Sprinkles
Procedure:
1. We will introduce several dessert bakers (Buddy, Duff) and their shops (DC Cupcakes, Carlos Bakery) and Reality TV shows associated with (The Next Great Baker, Cupcake Wars, Bake Off).
2. Students will look at the bottom of their plate to discover a folk tale (ex. Little Red Riding Hood, Ittsy Bitsy Spider) and will use the food on the table to represent these objects without writing or speaking.
3. Students will display their work on the front table and classmates will write their "guess" of what it is on a small post-it note and place it in front of the work.
4. Students will reveal their folk tale to the class and discuss their thought process behind their work.
5. Students will be able to eat their art!
